WHAT URB IS SAYING ABOUT DJ'S ARE ALIVE!

|
 |
HERE IS THE 060308
'OFFICIAL' D:FUSE E-FLYER!
Dear friends:
It’s hard to believe that spring is already creeping in because so
much has already happened this year. Yes, I’ve finally made The Big
Move from Austin to Los Angeles. As you can see I’ve started a new
sport I like to call “U-Haul-luge”.

***WARNING* this stunt was performed by amateurs in a fully
public roadway, professionals - do not try it!!!*** I’ve been kickin’
it roller-disco style at Venice Beach with a phat jam box pumping
out da funky house. LA is my new lady.

"even hard-core bladers get thirsty"

"thinking ‘bout starting a West Coast “blading gang” with Kent
Christian- watch your back!”
Big thanks to Kristina John, Jeffrey Dean and
Mirabella for organizing an intimate rooftop welcome party in
downtown LA. What I remember was quite special, and what I don’t
remember I can only imagine was an ass-ton of fun. More thanks to DJ Attila, Kris B, Darron, and the Deepsky boys for throwing down some beats and to everyone else who came out. Definitely some of the best margaritas I’ve ever had outside of
Texas, and the whole Tex-Mex theme brought a tear to my eye. My
Beagle, Lucy, definitely appreciated all the scraps that you drunken
fools dropped because she didn’t even nibble at her own dog food for
two days afterwards. Ohhh Chuy’s… The queso, the breakfast tacos,
the jalapeño ranch dressing… how much am I gonna miss you? Can you
believe they don’t have that stuff in LA! What have I done?

Anyway… Below is just about everything that’s
going on with me. Make sure you come up and say hello next time I’m
passing through your town and, as always, thanks for listening.

DJs ARE ALIVE PERFORM THEIR DEBUT SHOW IN NEW YORK CITY!

D:Fuse, Scumfrog, DJ Scribble, Static Revenger and Kristine W
recently joined forces to introduce their new live show at the Canal
Room in NYC. Fans and industry insiders alike filled the venue to
capacity on Thursday February 16th to see the launch of the new
project aimed at bringing live performance back into electronic
music. URB magazine was on-hand to cover the event. DJAA takes basic
loops then performs live vocals, keyboards, guitar, drums and
scratching superimposed over the loops to create new versions of
classic house tracks. “It was a mountain of work to pull it all
off,” said D:Fuse. “We were doing 12 to 14 hour rehearsal sessions,
but we wanted everything to be perfect. It was great to see it come
together at the debut show. There were a few minor blips, but that’s
what performing live is all about. Overall we’re really happy with
the show and the potential of what’s to come.” DJAA’s next
performance is scheduled for Miami, pre-WMC, at The Mansion on March
21st.

Alive Project
“It has been a long time since I’ve been this excited about a
musical project. With remixing getting less challenging by the
day, and underground dance music still losing ground in clubs
throughout the US, I was looking for a new challenge and found
it with DJs ARE ALIVE.” – The Scumfrog
With the rising use of laptops and digital files, live dance
music and DJing have become as exciting as watching people check
their email. Looking to bring the excitement back into the
genre, five of its most visible names have united to present DJs
ARE ALIVE, a collective formed by The Scumfrog, and featuring
dance music heavyweights D:Fuse, Static Revenger, DJ Skribble,
and Kristine W. The act will unveil its live show this February
in New York City and at the Winter Music Conference in March.
DJs ARE ALIVE is a unique exploration into a “live DJ set.” The
group will play “mash up” versions of classic club tracks and
their own material with the aid of 2 complete onstage DJ rigs,
drums, percussion, guitar, keyboards, sax, FX, and an iconic
female vocalist (who also plays an impressive array of musical
instruments). Just wait until you see Kristine W. kick it on the
saxophone! Click the following link for a look at the first-ever
DJs ARE ALIVE rehearsal at Kristine’s ranch in Las Vegas:
www.myspace.com/djsarealive
After the band was formed they immediately got to work on
recording a single; The Scumfrog started a groove on Pro-Tools
and sent it out to the rest of the band who added additional
parts. The result is “Gimme Some Love,” a track so good that DJs
around the world demanded a copy before it was even completed.
The finished track will be released this spring on Effin
Records.
DJs ARE ALIVE is truly one of the most exciting projects to hit
dance music in recent history, and while the genre is definitely
Dance, the spirit is a whole lot of rock and roll. DJs ARE ALIVE
sweeps the whole prima donna DJ thing under the rug, and most
importantly, it’s really, really good. There is some kind of
magic that’s created when these five dance icons get in the same
room and jam. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen.
SELECT QUOTES
“DJs Are Alive is about pretending to be a rock star for an hour
or so. You know, don some mascara, bang on the drums, and sing a
little to the crowd. Maybe even sling bottles of water on 'em.”
– D:Fuse
“Wow, when DJs come alive…it will set a new industry standard. I
can honestly say, there is nothing like it. We will be the
turntablists of the dance community! The opportunity of working
on a project like this is amazing…” -DJ Skribble
“Turns out, unlikely + talented = f**kin' good and DJs ARE ALIVE
are no less than that, and worth your full attention!” – Static
Revenger
DJs ARE ALIVE will unveil its live show this February in New
York City and at the Winter Music Conference!

DJ/Producer Stroud from Virginia provides remix duties of the
new Dub available on

that is a bit epic," says D:Fuse. "Stroud came to me wanting to
re-work the track and he did a killer job, it's good to see it
get released. "There It Is" was originally recorded in Austin,
TX and engineered by Claude 9. It is written and produced by

D:FUSE ‘PEOPLE_3’ LIVE ALBUM 2xCD (MOIST MUSIC, SEPTEMBER 20)

“The stereotype of “live” electronic music has long been about a
DJ standing around spinning records or staring at a laptop. So
when a DJ like D:Fuse really sticks his neck out, bringing with
him scads of live-band experience and pulling all the stops for
a top-notch show, you have to take notice.”
– REMIX MAGAZINE
For
PEOPLE_3, D:FUSE is taking the live DJ concept to
a whole new level. This
new
2xCD
PEOPLE_3 continues the concept of
"both sides of the picture"
with
Disc 1
‘People_Clubbing’ (live in San Francisco): the
club mix was recorded live in San Francisco @ Club Mighty on
July 29, 2005 featuring D:FUSE’s new live show with a full
percussion set up, including his signature mix of Electronic
Congas, Bongos, Tablas, and Timbales - as well as adding Tom Tom
drums, Cymbals and live filter effects. The live show also
included LA-based DJ/Producer
Mike Hiratzka on
guitar, bass, and keyboards and Austin’s
MC Flint on vocals.
On the flip side,
Disc 2
‘People_Chilling’ (Live in Austin): a chill-out
mix recorded live in Austin, TX at the Lift Room, providing the
perfect atmospheric pre-party or after-party soundtrack.
“The energy and feel you get when musicians work together in a
live setting is something you just can’t create with a computer.
When the curtain went up on the recording everything meshed. I’m
banging the drums like a maniac, Mike Hiratzka is bouncing up
and down like a pogo stick with his guitar, and MC Flint is
throwing the vocals down. The energy of the crowd that night was
off the charts, and it worked through what we were doing on
stage infectiously. We were very focused on bringing it for the
dance floor. It was about keeping it funky, keeping it fun, and
throwing in just a bit of spirituality for good measure. This is
the mix CD I’ve always wanted to do.”
– D:FUSE
PEOPLE_3
is the third installment in D:FUSE’s popular compilation series,
following
‘People’
released in February 2002 which immediately entered the CMJ
Chart at number 9, followed by ‘People_2:
Both Sides of the Picture’, a 2xCD mix for
System Recordings in
2003.
D:FUSE
began his musical career writing and performing industrial music
under the name "Culture Industry" before he turned to DJing. In
1998, he was signed to then premier electronic music label
Moonshine releasing three mix compilations, and
selling over 80,000 mix CDs for them. In 2001, D:FUSE was picked
out of the Lone Star state for his DJ skills by
Paul Oakenfold to tour with him on two consecutive
North American Perfecto tours with over 50 cities and
many sold-out dates. Then he followed up with a double CD mix
compilation for Paul Oakenfold's
Perfecto Presents series, beginning the
“People”
series. In 2004, he was voted
URB Magazine’s
#2 Artist/DJ for Winter Music
Conference 2004.
D:FUSE released his debut artist album
‘BEGIN’
to much acclaim in 2004 on
System Recordings. The album features
Motorcycle vocalist
JES and twelve original tracks, plus two bonus
remixes, including the hit singles "Everything
With You" and "Living
The Dream," with licensed compilation sales
reaching well over 150,000 units.
As
an electronic music pioneer in alternative media outlets,
D:FUSE can currently be heard on his own DJ mix show
“The
People’s Mix” one of America's top nationally
broadcasted electronic music shows on
XM Satellite Radio 80 in the primetime Saturday night
spot, heard by over 150,000 "people" every week. He will be
celebrating his 200th anniversary show in Fall 2005 featuring
live simulcasts at clubs across the continent. D:FUSE also has a
weekly Friday night show on
KBIG 104.3 FM in Los Angeles and on 101X FM in Austin
and is flying high on Delta
Airlines in-flight music programming with his very
own 45 minute ”Chill
Factor” electronic channel.
“It was electric from the get-go, a cohesive yet evolving
journey complete with guest performers and visual entertainment
that kept the energy in the club rocking all night long.
D: Fuse brought
producer/DJ/musician Mike
Hiratzka to the stage, armed with a guitar, bass and
a unique vintage keyboard to take the tracks up a notch: adding
new flavors to the rhythm, illustrating the melodies, and riding
the track transitions. Their chemistry was phenomenal, and it’s
no wonder that the word on the street suggests these two might
be teaming up for more shows in the near future. D:Fuse also
flew in MC Flint
from Austin, TX, whose lyrical skills provided yet another live
element for the audience to connect with. Starting off as a
subtle undercurrent, he brought his purring yum-yum hip-hop vibe
and a little bad boy funk into the mix.”
-365MAG.com - JULY 29th
live review
“His debut artist album is sultry work with lots of enjoyable
nuances. It dabbles in vocals and pop as much as dance music,
while possessing more meaningful moments than you can count.
D:Fuse’s appreciation for life, love and music is undeniable in
this genuinely lovely artist album.”
BPM Magazine
“D’FUSE isn’t merely a producer, nor only a DJ. He is a
musician.”
–THE PITCH“
[Begin] D:FUSE infuses his spacious sonic landscape with enough
peaks and valleys for a range of emotions to run through it.
Consider this one auspicious beginning.”
– BILLBOARD
“Debut full-length artist albums have the propensity to either
propel a jockey to rock-star status or throw them back behind
the decks, latched to a ball and chain. Well it looks like
D:FUSE is free to spread his wings and fly, as he presents a
well-rounded collection of downtempo pop ballads and
near-perfect chart-climbing club numbers on ‘Begin’”

WHAT ELSE THE PRESS IS
SAYING ABOUT D:FUSE!
“sexy sophistication” – DANCEMUSIC.ABOUT.COM
“His debut artist album is sultry work with lots of enjoyable nuances. It dabbles in vocals and pop as much as dance music, while possessing more meaningful moments than you can count. D:Fuse’s appreciation for life, love and music is undeniable in this genuinely lovely artist album.” BPM Magazine
“Gorgeous, ethereal solo debut from Austin’s most successful global export. ‘Begin’ is the sound of a DJ all grown up, the full extent of emotional and vocational maturation, as if happy hardcore and candy raves had just been someone else’s bad dream.” -AUSTIN CHRONICLE
“Three years in the making, ‘Begin’ is a varied, yet rich experience.” –
DJ TIMES
“’Begin’ is far and away D:FUSE’s best work to date, 12 tracks that resonate far beyond that ever-darkened dance floor and out into the real light of real life.” –AUSTIN CHRONICLE
“It’s nothing short of amazing. D:FUSE showcases his songwriting and production skills across the track list. The shocker is the solid work displayed as D:Fuse crosses a variety of styles with what appears to be the ease of a master painter working in a new medium. With each new track like a fresh brush stroke across a blank canvas, the tracks on Begin travel from trance to downtempo to synth-pop and ambient with a collage of instruments, including saxophone, piano, cello and acoustic guitar.” -RAVES.com ***** Five stars
“D:FUSE changes the status quo with ‘Begin’” –
INSIDE CONNECTION
“’Begin’ is a subtle organic journey.” –COOLJUNKIE.com
“D:FUSE proves himself not only as a deft handler of multiple styles (down-tempt, house, chill-out, trance) but also a gifted songwriter. IN a perfect world, any song as dynamic as ‘Everything With You’ would sit atop the playlists of radio stations throughout the land.”

D:FUSE TEAMS WITH ALLEN &
HEATH FOR LIVE DJ PERFORMANCE CD!
San Francisco, CA
(August 12, 2005) – Allen & Heath helped leading U.S.
progressive house DJ D:Fuse take live DJ performances to a new
level during the recording of his new double-disc set,
“People_3,” at the renowned San Francisco club Mighty recently.
For the special live recording, D:Fuse, performing with a full
electronic percussion setup, was accompanied by
multi-instrumentalist/DJ/producer Mike Hiratzka and MC Flint.
The event made use of an Allen & Heath Xone:62 professional DJ
mixer, a pair of Xone VF-1 analogue filter modules, and a
24-channel version of the brand new GL2400 mixing console.
“The show and the recording went flawlessly,” reports D:Fuse
from his project studio in Austin, TX, where he is busy
recording and mixing the chill disc that will accompany the live
performance set in the 2-CD set. The release is due on Moist
Music through Sony’s RED distribution wing in late September.
“The crowd was perfect and the vibe was amazing.”
The Xone:62 was a critical component of the live performance, he
continues. “That’s the mixer that I’ve used for years; I’m
really comfortable with it. The filter effect on the Xone:62 is
the most important thing for me.” For the studio-produced half
of the set, he says, “I’m using the Xone:62 mixer and the
filters, plus an outboard effects unit and the cymbals from my
Roland V-Drum kit. It’ll be a live thing, where I’m adding
subtle nuances and effects.”
The 80-minute recording at Mighty was preceded by a mix set by
D:Fuse before evolving into a performance featuring the DJ’s
signature live congas, bongos, tablas, timbales, tom toms and
cymbals, all played on Roland V-Drum and Handsonic electronic
percussion, together with Hiratzka on guitar, bass, and
keyboards and Austin's MC Flint on vocals. Voted the best new
club in America by Urb magazine, Mighty is in the emerging San
Francisco district of SOMISSPO, where SOMA, the Mission and
Potrero Hill meet.

“We really tried to make it so that all the parts were
integrated into the music, and added to the music, to create
more of an experience,” explains Hiratzka. “There was a VF-1 on
the DJ rig, mostly to get the valve overdrive. We all really
like the sound of it; it adds a really nice warmth to
everything. I was doing more textural washes with guitar, trying
to add something cool and a little bit different, so I ran the
outputs from my guitar pedals into the other VF-1, then into my
guitar preamp. It added some cool filter effects. I love when
you get the filters self-resonating, especially run through a
bunch of guitar effects. Wicked!”
Hiratzka continues, “We ran everything on stage through the
GL2400 then we ran a stereo feed out to the sound system. The
board worked great. The sound quality for the whole show was
awesome.”
The GL2400 provided a crucial interface to the recorder, he
says. “We ran the direct outs of the board to a Pro Tools|HD3
192 kHz rig so that we could record everything multitrack. The
direct outputs on the board are perfect for recording—it’s all
pre-fader, pre-EQ, so we got a really nice, dry signal for the
recording. We returned the Pro Tools rig back into the board, so
our recording engineer, Danny Chung, could monitor it.”

“It was a great recording desk for what we needed to do,” offers
Chung. “The mixer sounded great. We got a great recording out of
it. It suited our purposes fine. The VF-1 is phenomenal as
well.”
Separate tracks included D:Fuse’s three channels of electronic
drums plus five channels of guitar, keyboard and bass submixed
through a small mixer, a microphone on the guitar speaker
cabinet, the DJ mixer output, two vocal mics and two mics on the
crowd. Says Hiratzka, “I brought the recording back to my studio
and did some touch-ups in Pro Tools. I just did some level and
EQ adjustments here and there.”

D:FUSE'S DEBUT ARTIST ALBUM, BEGIN RECEIVES 5 STARS!
Billboard.com
D:FUSE BEGIN (SYSTEM)
by: Michael Paoletta
Progressive house and trance DJ
D:Fuse has helmed a handful of DJ-mix compilations. With "Begin,"
he embarks on his own journey as a proper artist. Those expecting
a collection solely consisting of banging beats and rhythms will
be disappointed. Instead, D:Fuse infuses his spacious sonic landscape
with enough peaks and valleys for a range of emotions to run through
it. On four songs, including the jangly "Letter to a Friend,"
D:Fuse deftly handles vocal duties. Elsewhere, he spotlights Jes
(of Motorcycle), Pete Lorimer (aka 29 Palms) and others. "Everything
With You" and "Living the Dream," both featuring
Jes, are dancefloor anthems. Conversely, the downtempo "Into
Me" finds Jes entering Marianne Faithfull (news) territory.
The Lorimer-fronted "A Light Less Broken" is smooth-sailing
house music. A beautifully ambient remix of "Living the Dream"
closes the album. Consider this one auspicious beginning.

D:FUSE BEGIN (SYSTEM)
***** (5 Stars)
After a number of mix albums, progressive
favorite D:Fuse has finally released his debut artist album Begin
on System Recordings and its nothing short of amazing. D:FUSE
showcases his songwriting and production skills across the track
list which includes two bonus remixes of "Everything With
You" and "Living The Dream". The shocker is the
solid work displayed as D:Fuse crosses a variety of styles with
what appears to be the ease of a master painter working in a new
medium. With each new track like a fresh brush stroke across a
blank canvas, the tracks on Begin travel from trance to downtempo
to synth-pop and ambient with a collage of instruments, including
saxophone, piano, cello and acoustic guitar.
The music on the album shows a depth
that many before D:Fuse have not been able to capture when constructing
their own artist works. D:Fuse even provides his own vocals on
tracks Begin, Indecision, Know It's Late, Blue Skies, and Letter
to a Friend, and plays drums and percussion throughout the album.
For a wonderful listening experience, this truly a great place
to Begin.

***** (5 Stars)
After three days of listening to
this disc in my car, at work, and at home, I can easily say it's
done much more than just grow on me. Finding something newly endearing
with every listen, it's easily my favorite disc of the moment.
D:Fuse is no stranger to the dance community, especially those
familiar with the superstar status he holds on the West coast,
but this disc of original material is reaching far beyond the
confines of both geographical AND musical boundaries. Known for
his energetic sets of progressive trance, D:Fuse has teamed up
with some great talents to produce what is without a doubt his
most commercial venture to date. Missing from the cover art are
D:Fuse's signature cowboy hat and killer smile, but one listen
and you'll see that also missing are any signs of taking his first
unmixed CD lightly.

D:FUSE PLAYS AT BURNING MAN!

D:FUSE traveled to remote desert
in Nevada on September 2nd through 6th, 2004 for a series of three
performances at the annual Burning Man Festival. Black Rock City
is the seventh largest city in Nevada during the week of Burning
Man and the experimental community was called "home"
by over 33,000 people over the Labor Day week. The city challenges
its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a
degree that is not normally encountered in one's day-to-day life.
D:Fuse camped out and performed a 7 hour set at the Opulent Temple
area. "It was an amazing experience." D comments. "I'll
never forget watching the sun come over the mountains and into
the playa. People were dancing as far as the eye could see into
the desert. To see people still smiling and soaking up the music
5 hours into the set is something I'll never forget." D:Fuse
also performed a day party Friday at the Deep End camp and Saturday
night at Sol System. "I had a great time playing everywhere.
All were unique experiences, great sound systems, and crowds;
but the entire experience of Burning Man was really what stole
the show for me. It was refreshing to see everyone coming together
and just being themselves. The art was some of the best I've ever
seen. It's like people tell you, words simply can't describe the
experience of Burning Man. A special thanks out to Adam for convincing
me to come play, and a special thanks to Jenni, Dr. Mike, Laura,
Hugo, Deb, Scott & Shannon for coming and making it all come
together!

On
October 2, 2004 San Francisco hosted Berlin's famous Love Parade

the parade and all night after parties. D:Fuse was featured on
the Spundae float at the parade's festival area 7-8pm, then performed
alongside Hybrid, Richard Humpty Vission and Sandra Collins at
the afterparty at Kelly's Mission Rock. D:Fuse performed to a
sold out crowd on the outdoor deck stage from 2am-sunrise. "The
entire experience was something I'll never forget. There are people
who say that dance music is on the decline. This weekend in San
Francisco proved them wrong. People will be talking about this
for years. Special thanks to Spundae and Opel Productions."Click

A special thanks out to Adam for convincing me to come play, and
a special thanks to Jenni, Dr. Mike, Laura, Hugo, Deb, Scott &
Shannon for coming and making it all come together!"
A brief, yet eloquent description of Burning Man taken from www.burningman.com
is written by Molly Steenson:
Hurtling down the road to the Black
Rock Desert, the colors paint themselves like a spice cabinet
-- sage, dust, slate gray. Maybe you're in your trusty car, the
one that takes you to and from work every day. Perhaps you've
got a spacious RV, your Motel 6 on wheels for the next days in
the desert. Or you're driving your glittering art car, complete
with poker chips and mirroring to do a disco ball proud.
The two-lane highway turns off onto
a new road. You drive slowly onto the playa, the 400 square mile
expanse known as the Black Rock Desert. And there youve
touched the terrain of what feels like another planet. Youre
at the end -- and the beginning -- of your journey to Burning
Man.
You belong here and you participate.
You're not the weirdest kid in the classroom -- there's always
somebody there whos thought up something you never even
considered. You're there to breathe art. Imagine an ice sculpture
emitting glacial music -- in the desert. Imagine the man, greeting
you, neon and benevolence, watching over the community. You're
here to build a community that needs you and relies on you.
You're
here to survive. What happens to your brain and body when exposed
to 107 degree heat, moisture wicking off your body and dehydrating
you within minutes? You know and watch yourself. You drink water
constantly and piss clear. You'll want to reconsider drinking
that alcohol (or taking those other substances) you brought with
you -- the mind-altering experience of Burning Man is its own
drug. You slather yourself in sunblock before the sun's rays turn
up full blast. You bring enough food, water, and shelter because
the elements of the new planet are harsh, and you will find no
vending.
You're here to create. Since nobody
at Burning Man is a spectator, you're here to build your own new
world. You've built an egg for shelter, a suit made of light sticks,
a car that looks like a shark's fin. You've covered yourself in
silver, you're wearing a straw hat and a string of pearls, or
maybe a skirt for the first time. You're broadcasting Radio Free
Burning Man -- or another radio station.
You're here to experience. Ride your
bike in the expanse of nothingness with your eyes closed. Meet
the theme camp -- enjoy Irrational Geographic, relax at Biancas
Smut Shack and eat a grilled cheese sandwich. Find your love and
understand each other as you walk slowly under a parasol. Wander
under the veils of dust at night on the playa.
You're here to celebrate. On Saturday
night, we'll burn the Man. As the procession starts, the circle
forms, and the man ignites, you experience something personal,
something new to yourself, something youve never felt before.
It's an epiphany, it's primal, it's newborn. And it's completely
individual.
You'll leave as you came. When you depart
from Burning Man, you leave no trace. Everything you built, you
dismantle. The waste you make and the objects you consume leave
with you. Volunteers will stay for weeks to return the Black Rock
Desert to its pristine condition.
But you'll
take the world you built with you. When you drive back down the
dusty roads toward home, you slowly reintegrate to the world you
came from. You feel in tune with the other dust-covered vehicles
that shared the same community. Over time, vivid images still
dance in your brain, floating back to you when the weather changes.
The Burning Man community, whether your friends, your new acquaintances,
or the Burning Man project, embraces you. At the end, though your
journey to and from Burning Man are finished, you embark on a
different journey -- forever.

D:FUSE TO PLAY LOVE PARADE IN SAN FRANCISCO!
On October 2, 2004 San Francisco
will host Berlin's famous Love Parade for the very first time
in the USA.
SAN FRANCISCO The world's largest
electronic music festival and parade is coming to San Francisco
on October 2, 2004. First held in Berlin in 1989, Loveparade San
Francisco is expected to draw thousands of revelers to the Bay
Area for a celebration of electronic music with a mission of fostering
tolerance, respect and understanding between nations.
San Francisco has long been a desired
location for huge, outdoor, eclectic events, including the worlds'
largest Gay pride celebration and the famous Castro Halloween
and Folsom Street Fair parties. Loveparade promises to be an event
of the same caliber, drawing a colorful and diverse audience while
increasing the existing tourist draw to the city.
This is the first time Loveparade has
been held in the United States; similar events are regularly held
in other cities around the globe, including Mexico City, Cape
Town, and Tel Aviv.
The event has garnered excitement from
the business community and beyond. California Assemblymember Mark
Leno was among those to recently offer his congratulations on
the city's acquisition of the parade, calling it a "momentous
and historic" celebration. "I commend your commitment
to create an international community where music, dance, love
and diversity can creatively flourish."
International DJ/Producer Paul Van Dyk
stated, "I was very excited when I heard that the Loveparade
will take place in North America for the first time. I am sure
that the positive and peaceful vibe of this event will be an extra
feature in the amazing cultural life of San Francisco and is going
to become an annual highlight."
The Loveparade will begin along San
Francisco's scenic Embarcadero and make its way through the South
of Market area. It will end along the waterfront in the newly
redeveloped Mission Bay district with a daylong celebration featuring
music, dancers, and a variety of vendor booths. Top local and
international DJs will also be featured at the waterfront festival,
as well as on the floats as they make their way along the parade
route. For more information please visit www.loveparadesf.org

D:FUSE FEATURED IN NEW YORK ART EXPOSITION!
The Larger than Life International DJ
Exhibition started in it's conception one year ago. It began with
a request by the fans of the music...
In all of my career, I've painted images of People that have been
significant to me in one way or another. I have been a fan of
the music myself in day-to-day activities such as dance, listening
to music or even being entertained by film. It only seemed appropriate
for me to put faces to the music.
I envision the Larger than Life exhibition
to forever be ongoing and evolving. Adding new, as well as featuring
other DJ's from around the world. I used vibrant colors to help
enhance the energy that I feel through the music of each of the
artists.
I hope that this exhibition helps new and old fans recognize these
talented musicians as important faces in history.

D:FUSE PLAYS R.O.A.R.
RALLY AT CAPITOL IN WASHINGTON DC!
"We have been asleep long enough.
Go away tonight knowing that our scene is under attack by the
government. Get out, get informed and get active. More than anything,
get out and register to vote. Our voices must be heard!"
Was the rally cry of D:Fuse at the ROAR event on the lawn of the
capitol in Washington DC protesting recent legistlation against
the electronic music scene asapproximately 2,000 people
gathered and grooved in resistance to the U.S. government's clampdown
on electronica music and its club scene, under the guise of the
War on Drugs Organized by ROAR!, the National Dance & Music
Rights Alliance, with the support of the ACLU, Drug Policy Alliance,
and the D.C. Nightlife Coalition, the musical protest featured
illustrious DJs such as Junior Vasquez, Jesse Saunders, Polywog,
and D:Fuse, spinning, from noon to midnight, in name of "Freedom
of Expression." Young, stylish people of varying sexual orientations,
ethnicities, and music affiliations danced to the surging rhythms
of electronica. Despite the near perfect weather, crystal ball
hovering above the stage, and faint sentiments of PLUR (Peace,
Love, Unity, and Respect), the party was nonetheless restrained,
echoing the gravity of the federal government's recent assaults
on youth culture.

Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act, citing it as a "violation
of our rights as American citizens." S.226, formerly the
Rave Act of 2002, was slipped into the Amber Alert (child abduction
legislation) and passed on April 10, 2003 "without public
notice, a hearing, or proper debate," says the Electronic
Music Defense & Education Fund (EM:DEF).
The legislation, which expands on Section
416(a) of the Controlled Substance Act - also known as the "Crackhouse
Statute" (21 U.S.C. 856) - makes it easier to convict property
owners and promoters who have patrons on the premises under the
influence of drugs. "This bill will negatively affect everyone
that loves music whether they listen to Jazz, Rock and Roll, Country,
Hip Hop, Dance or otherwise," says D:FUSE. "This law
blatantly penalizes responsible business owners for the actions
of a few. How can our government expect club, venue, and property
owners to keep drugs out of our their establishments one hundred
percent, when the government has failed miserably in keeping drugs
off the streets? How can our government expect this when families
can't keep drugs out of their own homes?"
While EM:DEF is consulting with the ACLU
and DPA on what to do next, D:FUSE already has plans to campaign
vociferously against the legislation. Setting up benefits in different
cities during his People_2 CD release tour, D:FUSE has teams distributing
flyers at each event, urging fans of the music to take action
by contacting their congressmen and making others aware of the
injustice.
WWW.DJDFUSE.COM has had information posted
on the messageboard and homepage for weeks, and D:FUSE has encouraged
an organization in DC to organize a major club event on the matter,
in which he'll perform. He has also been encouraging the legendary
California-based Spundae to organize an event to rally people.
"I will be happy to volunteer my services in any way that
can help," D:FUSE says.

D:FUSE Interview With
Progressive-Sounds.com: (May
2003)
PS: Your introduction to the music
scene came almost a decade ago now, but where would you first
say your love of music originated from, and what made you decide
to move from performing industrial music as 'Culture Industry'
into djing?
D:FUSE: My music in Culture Industry
was stagnating. It was a bit of a rebellious stage for me at the
time. I had grown up listening to Album Rock, Folk, and 80's Alternative/New
Wave so the sterility and hardness of Industrial music attracted
me as something completely different. I don't think it was really
"me" at the end of the day. The band began having lineup
problems and I was basically the only one keeping it going. I
had put so much hard work and time in the band that I was depressed
about it failing. I had just graduated from college and had no
idea what to do with my life. I went to an underground club in
Austin (Proteus) which was leading the new movement of clubbing.
It was like nothing I had ever seen. I felt a new connection and
vitality in the music. This was 94-95 and the Techno and Trip
Hop being played at this club was amazing. Not nearly as negative
as industrial. I bought a pair of turntables shortly thereafter
and I was hooked.
PS: Alongside fellow Texan Shane Howard,
you formed Expansion, with early tracks such as 'Feel' and 'Perspectives'
both receiving critical acclaim from many djs, and this was followed
by a teaming with LA based producer Joy for the tracks 'You Got
It' and 'She Rides', the latter of which was signed to Paul Oakenfold's
infamous Perfecto imprint. How much did you learn in terms of
production from these two individuals, and how did it feel when
Oakenfold picked up 'She Rides'
for his label?
D:FUSE: I learned a lot from Shane Howard
in the ways of being picky with sounds. He doesn't settle for
any sound until it's absolutely perfect for the part. It was a
bit frustrating at first, but once we got the finished product
done I learned that being picky was vital if you wanted a stand-out
track. I still believe the tracks I wrote with Shane are some
of the best I've been involved with. They still sound current
and still rock my dancefloors.
Joy is one of the best engineers on the
planet. He's a good producer as well. He works extremely fast
and really knows how to tweak sounds fast. He and Mark Horwood
(Who I wrote a lot of the album with in Chichester,UK) are lightning
fast and extremely experienced with Logic Audio. I can have a
idea in my head and have it playing through the speakers in seconds,
and that makes the studio experience a lot more bareable for me.
For the most part studio work drives me crazy. I'm very intense
into the writing process, and it can get a bit tedious.
When Oakenfold contacted me I was really
excited. His Mix CD JDJ on Moonshine was the first time I had
ever heard Trance in my life, so I was a big fan. I really believed
in She Rides, it was my first foray into vocals since my band,
so I wanted to sign to a label that would work it properly, so
Perfecto seemed like the right fit.
PS: Your popularity as a dj across the
US has seen you take up residency on the country's XM Satellite
Radio network with your radio show 'The Move' broadcast throughout
the US, and recently have started a monthly show called 'The Mile
High Mix' for the aircraft company Delta Airlines as part of their
in-flight entertainment. What do you try to do with both shows?
Do you try to cater the content to each project, bearing in mind
the different listener bases?
D:FUSE: I definitely cater each mix to
when and where it will be played. I host each show as well. I
want the audience to connect with the music by learning about
it. So I announce all the Artists/Tracks I'm playing throughout
the sets and try to give a little background on them as well.
With Delta radio, the set was more toned down and with lots of
melody and vocals. With XM, my shows "The People's Mix"
and "The Lift Room", I play a bit deeper. I usually
start with down tempo stuff and work my way into Deep House, Tech
House, and Trance/Progressive. I try to have some sort of melody
and funkiness in most tracks I play on the shows. XM is a national
broadcast, so I'm excited about getting this music out to such
a large audience on a weekly basis.
PS: 'Everything With You', featuring
your friend and vocalist Jes has gone from strength to strength
and now thanks to it's full release on 3Beat looks set to really
catapult you further into the spotlight, serving as a precursor
to your album 'Begin'. Does Jes feature on any other tracks on
the album, and what else can we expect to hear?
D:FUSE: She sang on another track I wrote
called "Into Me". She's a very versatile vocalist, she's
absolutely amazing, so I wanted to show that off. The track is
about a girl obsessed with someone unobtainable, it's a very sexy,
Massive Attack-ish sort of number so her vocal style is much raspier,
deeper, and raw. J Scott G from Deepsky engineered both tracks,
and when she was singing the lyrics we were looking at each other
like "damn, that is hooooooooooot!" I'll be going back
into the studio with Jes and Joy in a few weeks to cut one more
track for the album which will have a feel a lot like "Everything
With You".
PS: We have heard a rumour that you were recently in the studio
with the Chi-town trio of drunkards known as Grayarea. Can you
confirm this if true, and having survived an excursion at their
home, what came out of the studio with them?
D:FUSE: I'm from Texas, so I consider
myself a bit of a drinker. But damn! Those boys can pound the
sauce. God bless 'em. They buy this bottom shelf Bourbon called
"Big Ten" or something like that, which tastes like
ass but really gets the studio vibe going. Nosmo was making them
exta tall so shit was getting written, only not by me. I'm not
kidding, normally I'm in the studio directing the show, but Grayarea
was running loops around me. All 3 of them take turns on Reason,
and all of them have a great ear. So I was drunk in a corner contributing
by repeating "uh, yeah, that sounds good" all night.
Finally I jotted down some lyrics and laid down vocals. The track
has a chill, deep-ish "Days Go By" feel to it with a
real dreamy melody. It's featured on the new People_2 CD. Grayarea
also writes under "Blueletter" and they have 2 tracks
on CD 1. I'm a big fan of these guys. Their PA at the WMC was
my favorite set of the conference. Expect to hear a lot more from
them in the future.
PS: Your dj sets these days have a fresh edge to them with your
use of
percussion via a Roland V-Pad, as well as Jes providing vocals
during Live PAs. With the album project running alongside, do
you have plans to expand things further and further?
D:FUSE: I've been a drummer all of my
life, so I plan to bring out a full V-Drum set on that tour and
another percussionist. I'll also be performing my vocals live
as well. I also work with a live keyboardist out of San Francisco
named Sen-Sei. The guy is really accomplished and has great stage
energy, so we're working on adding him to the bill as well. I
eventually want to have a full-on live show. Lots of musicians.
I really miss playing in bands so I want to get back to it. I
recently played at Coachella with Thievery Corporation, and their
live show was my favorite. I really got inspired. Go check them
out if you get a chance on the tour.
PS: Your influences range from the eerie unearthly sampling and
sounds of The Orb and Future Sound Of London to artists and djs
such as BT, Quivver and Paul Oakenfold. Would you say they still
influence you today, or are there perhaps others you would say
play a big part in influencing your sound now?
D:FUSE: They were definitely key influences
early on to develop my sound. But now my influence is a bit more
varied. I've been listening to a lot of Miles Davis lately. I've
also been listening to modern soul stuff like Maxwell, Sadie,
and Angie Stone as well as acoustic alternative stuff like Howie
Day. I find listening to stuff like this allows me to pick dance
records that are more focused and timeless in my DJ sets and shows.
So much dance music out there is so bland and disposable. You
can get so obsessed with the beat that you make lazy decisions
on records. I really try to pick tracks that are good enough to
stand by themselves just as well as in a mix with other stuff.
PS: Do you prefer a hardware or software based studio environment,
and what is the most essential item in your studio that you could
not be without?
D:FUSE: I'm not a head with gear at all.
I generally work through engineers, but I tend to like hardware
based stuff because I'm a musician. It's never the same playing
something on keys when you can grab a pair of sticks and bang
it out live. The two pieces of gear I use most in the studio are
my Roland Handsonic and V-Drums. The Handsonic goes everywhere
with me whether playing live or in the studio. I simply can't
work without it anymore. I also depend on my Digitech Vocal 300
for a lot of my voice work.
PS: With your album project still ongoing, what do you hope it's
release will do for you in the coming months?
D:FUSE: Being a DJ tends to get you stereotyped
in a way. I want this album to show that DJs are musicians as
well. It's got live bass, piano, and drums throughout while keeping
true to an electronic format. I really hope it opens a lot of
new ears to this music.

Artist
Interviews D:FUSE: (May 2003)
1).ARTIST INTERVIEWS: D:Fuse, your double CD, "People_2:
Both Sides of the Picture" combines incredible mixing and
percussion with chalet and club music. I wanted to ask you about
"People_Chilling", what inspired you to mix a chillout
CD?
In the first couple of years of Ding,
I used to record chill CDs to listen to and give out to friends,
and I realized going back through my mixes that those were my
favorite CDs to listen to. They continued to have a timeless quality
to them. I wanted to release something like that and give people
another side of what I'm into. CD 1 in the first People release
went a bit in that direction, the music still had a housey beat
but it was definitely in a more chill vein, and CD 2 stepped up
a notch from there. I wanted this one to sound like two completely
different Djs. I really believe the music in CD 1 is some of the
most original stuff I've heard in a long time. It's not just loungey
stuff to listen to as a background medium like a lot of Chill
comps out there. It certainly has those qualities, but if you
listen closer you'll find something that moves deeper. Back in
the day, CDs like Sasha and Digweed's Northern Exposure set up
a mood that wasn't necessarily dominated by the beat, and I missed
that. The mix a steady groove from ambient to down tempo to chill
house, and I'm really happy with how the progression worked out.
It's got several tracks that I wrote for the upcoming full length
album, so it'll give the public a glimpse of where I'm heading
in the future.
2). A.I.: The second mix CD, "People_Clubbing"
has a strong, hi-energy mix that will keep people rocking on the
dance floor. How do you begin to create a mix?
On most of my mix CD releases, I try
to make the mix as something to listen to rather than acting like
it's a night out at the club. I think music you play a peak hour
at a club doesn't necessarily translate when you're listening
to music at home and vise-versa. But I've always had people comment
about how they wanted a mix that mimicked my live feel. So this
is it, it's probably the funkiest, hardest mix I've ever done.
It's still got some peaks and valleys to it, it still contains
melody and some old-school epic qualities, but it never lets up
from beginning to end. It couldn't be any further from the feel
of CD1.
3). A.I.: On the "Both Sides of
the Picture" you produced some of the songs, such as "Blue
Skies", "Everything With You" and "NYD".
Which computer system and software did you use to compose?
Blue Skies was written in Chichester,
UK with Mark Horwood. We first worked together on the remix I
did for Deep Architecture "The Realm". He's a great
engineer with a degree in Jazz, he's a very talented pianist.
That's him on the piano solo on that track. We used Logic Audio,
I played all the drum and percussion parts live on the Roland
V-Drums and the Handsonic and later dumped them into Logic Audio
as well. We used an old Moog rip-off made by Yamaha on the baseline.
It's got an incredibly warm sound. "Everything With You"
was written in Los Angeles. J Scott G from Deepsky engineered
the track and uses Logic Audio as well. We used the Korg Triton
for some of the warm bell sounds and a load of soft synths for
the bassline and pads. "NYD" was written in Austin.
Claude 9 engineered it, he uses an old Version of Vision for sequencing.
We used a new piece of gear by Novation called the K-Station for
just about everything else. It's amazingly easy to use and the
sounds are thick as hell and easily tweaked. I performed all of
the percussion stuff live on the Handsonic for this one as well.
4). A.I.: You use the "Roland V-Pad"
to play in your live shows. What other gear do you use when you
are performing?
Besides the Handsonic, I use the Allen
and Heath Xone series mixers. It's the best damn mixer on the
market. I have the Xone:62 at my home studio, and I used it to
record People_2. It has a really warm sound and the e.q's and
slides are really smooth. It was recorded live and no sound editing
besides mastering took place, but you'd swear it was Pro-Tooled.
Did I mention I love this mixer? I also use the DigiTech Vocal300
for my voice work on my XM shows on The Move and my weekly show
on Q101 in Chicago.
5). A.I.: D:Fuse can you tell us about
your live PA shows with Jes?
We've done three shows so far, two in
San Francisco and one in Los Angeles. When she gets on the mike
she sounds exactly as angelic as she does on the record, and the
crowds just melt. She loves performing and it shows. Logistically
it's a bit challenging to pull off, but I plan to include her
on several shows on the People_2 tour.
6). A.I.: You have opened for Paul Oakenfold.
How did you meet and begin to work and tour together?
Nick McGeachin signed on as my manager
a little over two years ago and passed some demos to Paul. He
was impressed and looking for a new partner for touring, and the
US press was slagging him a bit. It was a good fit for him to
pick a US DJ. I had a blast on those tours and the crowds were
amazing. Paul is funny as hell in person.
7). A.I.: You are working on an artist
album that will be released in 2004. Can you talk to us about
the project?
I think the People_2 CD will give people
a good idea of where I'm heading as an artist. The album is really
eclectic with styles ranging from Trance to Dub to Down tempo
to Synth Pop to Acoustic and Ambient. I also throw in the kitchen
sink for good measure! It sounds like a hell of a lot of styles
but it still follows a cohesive line. I hope it pushes the boundaries
out there a bit. I do a bit of singing on this one, which was
hell to pull off. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best
singer, but luckily there's this little box that could auto-tune
my vocals, thank God! I wrote all of the lyrics and some of the
songs just felt better when I sang them myself. Jes sings on two
of the tracks and we're going back in the studio in a few weeks
to record another one with Joy doing the engineering.
8). A.I.: You have spoken for label rights
and against illegitimate CD burning. With so many file sharing
programs out there coming out, do you think lowering CD prices
would be another solution, besides controlling illegal downloads?
I first think we need to educate the
consumers that illegal downloading and burning is not okay. People
need to realize that they are killing the music by burning. It
is stealing, it is wrong. Everyday I see music professionals,
friends of mine who've worked and built a business through blood,
sweat, and tears and now they're all closing their doors. Artists
need to get paid for their work or the music dies, which is what
is happening more and more every day, with every download or burn.
I do also believe that they should lower the prices. Take the
example of DVDs. They lowered the price by half and ended up selling
tons more. For the same price as a CD you get 2 hours of video
and music on a DVD plus interviews, etc. With a CD you get music
and that's it. How does this make sense? I personally contacted
all of the artists on People_2 and asked them to cut their pricing
to compensate. I invested money in it myself to get the price
down. We kept our art budget in check. With this CD consumers
are getting 2 discs for less money than price of one, and I think
it's a huge step in the right direction. I just bought 2 single
CDs today and it set me back $43!!! Does this make sense? The
business has changed, it's never going to be like it was. You
should be able to walk into a record store and buy a CD for $10.
If people could more affordably purchase CDs not nearly as many
would burn them. Instead record stores keep raising prices because
they're selling less, which makes consumers buy even less, and
the cycle keeps spiraling down. The record business should have
woke up to this years ago. Lowering the price was a major reason
I released my last mix, Illusionmix, for $10 and made it available
exclusively through my web site.
9). A.I.: You have been making dance
music for more than ten years. How do you see the dance and underground
scene lately?
It's going as well as eveything else
everywhere in the world. Its slow, its scared, it's unsure. I
believe our countries leaders are making terrible and potentially
catastrophic foreign policy decisions and creating reckless domestic
economic strategies. The economy will not recover while we continue
to create a "war on terror". And until the economy recovers
people for the most part are not going to have money to go to
clubs or buy mix CDs. The recent passage of the Rave Bill is also
bad news for the scene. Everyone that loves dance music needs
to let their voices be heard. People need to log onto www.emdef.org
and get aware and get active. The shows I'm doing are still going
strong, but I can't help but worry. I travel all over the nation
and everyone is losing their jobs. Something's got to give. But
I don't think things have a chance to change until we vote for
the right leader in 2004.
.
10). A.I.: What other electronic music artists have captured your
attention?
The Royksopp album is amazing. The Alpinestars
album "White Noise" is great. Grayarea aka Blueletter
out of Chicago are doing some very inventive stuff. Steve Porter's
stuff always floors me. Michael Anthony from San Francisco and
DJ Shell of Columbus, OH is are two of my favorite US DJs at the
moment.
11). A.I.: FInally, what's a day in the
life of D:Fuse like?
The first thing I do is drink a monster
cup o' joe, strap on my headphones and go running with my wife
Jenni and beagle Lucy. We just ran a ½ marathon which is
something I thought I'd never do. Generally after that I'm in
the studio reviewing records, recording mix shows, answering emails
or returning calls. Then if it's a good night my favorite thing
is to hang on my balcony in the hammock with my girl, sip wine,
and listen to Sade. Nice! If it's the weekend I'm off to the airport
to fly somewhere and perform a couple of nights, and return late
Sunday night a bit hung over but still smilin'. The travel's rough
but I love performing the shows and seeing new places! I wouldn't
trade my life for the world.

D:FUSE
Soon to Release "People_2: Both Sides of the Picture"!
(Cowboy) Hats Off to Dance Music Artist D:FUSE's People_2 -
A Double CD Mix of Downtempo and Uptempo Rhythms
New York, NY - Renowned DJ/Producer/Artist
D:FUSE brings you People_2: Both Sides of the Picture- a double
CD set of contrasting moods - due out on System Recordings June
3rd, 2003. The double CD set pits a downtempo mix - People Chilling
- up against a hi-energy mix designed to encompass the club feel
- People Clubbing. Showcasing five never-before-released tracks
from D:FUSE, People_2 is certain to have audiences salivating
for his artist album, set to come out in 2004.
A Texas native, D:FUSE has been making
progressive dance music for over ten years, producing hits played
by every major DJ from Paul Oakenfold to Carl Cox. With an on-going
DJ residency at the legendary Release in San Francisco, a busy
touring schedule in the US, as well as headlining spots in the
UK, D:FUSE is a hot item worldwide. D:FUSE's DJ sets include an
element of live performance, using the
Roland V-Pad to play percussion during his DJ sets and featuring
LA-based vocalist Jes for live PAs. D:FUSE also holds his place
in radio with two shows on XM Satellite Radio and a weekly mix
on Q101's Sonic Boom in Chicago. The progressive icon will also
be featured in the new documentary, "Put the Needle on the
Record."
An activist for a number of causes, D:FUSE
actively campaigns against the Rave Act and performs at registration
drives in support of "Rocking the Vote." D:FUSE also
campaigns vociferously for artist and label rights in the light
of the huge increase in illegitimate CD burning which has blighted
the music industry recently.
Says superstar DJ Paul Oakenfold, who
enlisted D:FUSE as his opening DJ on two North American Perfecto
tours, "D:FUSE represents what I admire most. He's worked
hard for what he's achieved, he's a fantastic DJ and artist, he
has a creative mind and he understands the whole vibe."
D:FUSE's latest project, People_2: Both
Sides of the Picture, a double CD mix for System Recordings, is
the sequel to People, released on Oakenfold's Perfecto label in
2002. From light, atmospheric melodies in Feel's "Fearless"
to funkier, chunkier beats in Blueletter's "Bottom Rung,"
CD1: People Chilling slowly builds from airy to funky melodic,
though still maintaining a relaxed mood, closing with two consecutive
D:FUSE tunes, one of which - "Everything With You" -
entered the Balance dance charts at # 6 and is burning up in the
UK. CD2: People Clubbing brings the tempo up with added percussion,
vocoders, and synths. Featuring D:FUSE's exclusive remixes of
"There is Hope" and "Wash," the set closes
with "NYD," the strong D:FUSE cover of a familiar tune.
With two distinctly separate records in one package, People_2
is unparalleled.
